Scruffy the tuesday dog
This is actually probably one of the most heart breaking - and heart warming - books I've ever read! And it's based on a true story!
Official summary :: Life began in hardship for Scruffy, carried by her mother from a fire only to be orphaned by a sheepherder's rifle. Soon she is rescued by some merciful children but leaves them to make her way back to the city. A kindly street performer takes her in the middle of a cold night, fate decides that Scruffy must once more be alone.
Along that is, until a bullterrior named Butch accpets her as part of the street packt hat beds down each night in an abandoned car and roams the streets during the day. Then one terrible day they are all taken to the pound and condemned to death. But by now, Scruffy has talent for survival. She not only saves the day but she becomes a national celebrity!
There are spoilers ahead. ;D
Summary by me :: At the beging there is a dog that is about to have pups, but her owners are moving to an apartment where they can't have dogs. Thinking the soon-to-be mother will be good and stay where they tie her up in the front yard to wait for her new owner, they drive away. But the dog is frightened and gets lose, going back into the house, where she thinks her owners will be coming back to get her.
When the people that had bought the dog come to get her and find just the rope that had been used to tie her up, they drive away, thinking that they'll find her somewhere else. But they don't - and they never even thought to look in the old abandoned house.
The dog, knowing she is going to have the pups, soon, makes a makeshift area to have them and keep them for a while. There are three that are born. After a few days of not having enough food, two of the pups die, leaving the mother with the only survivor. She gets along pretty good with just the one pup. Until the house is started on fire to build something else there.
The dog knows she has to get herself and the puppy out or they will both die. But when she still lived with her people, she was trained not to go to the upper level of the house no matter what - and this is the only way away from the fire. Deciding it is the only thing to do, she forces the pup up the stairs, following her. The dog then finds then climbs up the chimney with the pup in her mouth, barley excaping the fire.
Since people were there with machinery to work on the house, they were able to save both the pup and it's mother. One of the men were kind enough to bring them both home to his wife - a very big animal lover - where they are taken care of.
The pup is happy with her new life, but her mother is not. So what do they do? The mother dog decides they must leave and the pup follows.
A bit later they find a field of sheep - and the pup - still to young to know any better chases after them. The mother dog tries to stop her young pup because she knows what'll happen, but the owner of the sheep shoots and kills the mother dog and wounds the pup. As fate would have it, later that night, the man's own children find the pup and take her up to the barn to take care of her and nurse her back to health.
A little bit of time goes by until the pup excapes her second home and is out on the streets again. But this time she is taken in by a wonderful homeless man who would do anything for the pup. He even gives her a name - Scruffy - after one of his past dogs. The two share many laughs together until one cold night finally got the best of the old man and killed him.
When the ambulience came to take him, Scruffy followed it, thinking that he was still alive. She didn't want to leave him. This was the one man she could actually love and wanted him to take care of her.
Somehow Scruffy falls in the river and a bull dog comes to her rescue. He gets her out and brings her to the junkyard where he and his 'pack' live. The dogs all accept Scruffy, but only because it was their 'leader' who brought her in.
Time passes again and many differnt things happen. Then the dogs are caught by the dog catcher - most at differnt times. And for some reason or another, none of them are wanted. "To ugly." "Not friendly enough." "Wouldn't go with the carpet." If people so much as found one flaw, they wouldn't take the dog.
After the week that the keep the dogs for, they come to get Scruffy to bring her on that 'last walk'. Butch, the pit bull, tries to attack the people that are going to take Scruffy, so they take him to, knowing it will calm them both down and make them happy one last time.
As the people and the two dogs start going through the door, someone else calls for him to stop right away. They had gotten tons of phone calls just about Scruffy since a news crew came in and did a story about her!
People came in by the dozens wanting that little scruffy dog they had seen on the TV, all eager to give her a home! The people at the shelter took the first few people that got there for Scruffy to come into the office. Deciding it would be best to let Scruffy pick who she wanted her owner to be, that's what they did. And she ran right up to a sweet little boy. But it wasn't only a happy ending for Scruffy, but for all the dogs in the pack along with countless others!
Now.. If you just read that, that gives you a very good idea of what goes on. But if this book doesn't make you cry and laugh and everything in between, you aren't human. That, or you have no heart. ;D
The only thing is... I can't recall who wrote it. >.> But as soon as I go home, I'm going to check...! And then I'll post it here. ;D
But really... You all must read it. It's something you won't regret! I got my mom's old copy and it was kinda worn out from being read so much!
