It was just another ordinary day. The sun was high, and the bitter remembrance of winter was long gone. Kodi was about doing his business when suddenly his whole sled team approached him. He saw their shadows behind him and turned around. Kodi wagged his tail eagerly and ran to his friends. “What’s up guys? What are you all doing here,” Kodi excitedly asked, “Wait, don’t tell me…do we have an errand to run, because I don’t mind!”

His friends didn’t respond. Kodi cocked his eyebrow, “Is everyone okay? You guys are so quiet, its kind of scaring me?”

Dusty nudged Kirby. He glanced at her. She flicked her paw towards Kodi. Kirby gulped, and confronted him. “What’s up Kirby?” Kodi smiled. Kirby stuttered, “ I…I don’t know how to say this…umm…Kodi…” Kirby looked into Kodi’s innocent eyes.

Dusty rolled her eyes, “ Gosh Kirby, just tell him already!”
Kodi’s smiled quickly faded away. Kodi walked past Kirby and came up to Dusty. “Tell me what Dusty?” A serious look came over him. Dusty closed her eyes and told Kodi the shocking words. “Kodi, you’re off the team. I’m sorry.”

Kodi’s mouth hung open. “Wait, why?” Kirby put his paw on Kodi’s shoulder. “ We found someone else. We need strong dogs to make it to Anchorage.” Explained Kirby. Kodi snapped at Kirby. Kirby backed off; Kodi had never done that before…he was his best friend. “What do you mean someone else? You mean I’m replaced, by who?”

Just then a sleek black and white husky with blue eyes made his way into the conversation. “That would be me.” he spoke. Kodi turned around and faced him. “ Now who are you?” Kodi growled viciously. Dusty and some other members of the team leaped in between Kodi and his replacement. “Kodi! The last thing we need right now is you ripping our newest member to shreds!” Dusty roared.

Kodi lowered his ears, and stopped baring his teeth. Kodi’s replacement scoffed. “ My name is Don. I came here to Nome looking for a position as a sled dog. Running is in my blood, my father used to be the fastest in Nome. Until some wolf took it away from him, now… he sees no reason to live any longer.”

Kodi’s eyes widened. “ Could it be…could he actually be Steele’s son?” Kodi shook off the idea and asked Don a question, “ So what does being a sled dog and taking my job have to do with your father?” Everyone focused on Don. Don smiled, “ Well I feel being a sled dog…is the only reason my father fight to stay alive. When he sees me take off running, he says that it reminds him of himself when he was younger.”

Kodi didn’t fall into Don’s cheap gooey story. There was something about Don that made Kodi not trust him. Kodi grinned, “So you say you can run? How bout’ a little race! You and me, first one to take one lap around this street wins.” Kodi trotted on to the street and crouched into a racing position.

Don willingly agreed and followed Kodi. The whole team crowded around the two. Don barked at Dusty, “Dusty, can you howl?” Dusty nodded. Kodi laughed, “ Fine, on Dusty’s howl we start!” Don and Kodi assumed their positions and waited for Dusty’s signal. Everything was silent as everyone waited for Dusty’s howl.

Expectedly Dusty howled. Kodi sprang forward and took the lead. He was fast, and had already taken a large lead over Don. Then, just as Kodi was beginning to feel confident in himself, he saw Don. They were about neck and neck. Kodi thrusted forward, hoping that Don would not catch up. But to his surprise Don did the same. The race was coming to an end. Kodi and Don were running at top speed. Kodi panted and struggled, Don was just too fast. Kodi stopped and took a breather.

Don charged to the finishing line. Don was congratulated, and he was officially made part of the team. Don suddenly realized the Kodi was left in the dust…well his dust. He approached a defeated Kodi. He stuck his paw out, “ Good race, you were really good! Kodi just stood there, looking at the snow. He slowly raised his head. When Don looked into Kodi’s eyes they were filled with hatred.

Kodi snarled and took a swipe at Don. It was a clear hit. Don’s face was cut, blood dripped endlessly. Kirby ran to Kodi and tackled him. Dusty swiftly ran to Don. Kirby yelled at Kodi. Kodi arrogantly shouted back and threw Kirby off him. Everyone watched in horror as Kodi completely lost his way. He started attacking other members of the team. Blood was shed as he injured most of the dogs.

Humans saw Kodi and pulled him away. Kodi watched as the humans shooed him away. Kodi realizing what he had done just ran far from there. “ What have you done to yourself Kodi?”

*1 month later (present)

Dusty and Kirby look at a large wooden door. “It’s been one month…one month we haven’t seen him.” Dusty whispered to Kirby. Kirby whispered back, “Yup, wonder how he’s doing?” Dusty gulped and took a deep breath. “Only one way to find out.” Dusty took her claws and scratched on the door.

Kirby and Dusty waited. Voices from inside were heard, and Kirby and Dusty listened. “Hun, get the door!” a female that sounded like Jenna yelled. “Why do I have to, I’m busy!” a Balto-like voice hollered. “ What did you say to me?” the female voice responded. “ Sheesh, stop putting so much pressure on me woman!” the male voice screamed. “The only pressure you’ll be getting from me is around your neck, if you don’t answer that door!” The female viscously replied.

Then there was sudden silence. Dusty and Kirby looked at each other awkwardly. Suddenly the door opened and it was Balto. “Hi Mr. Balto sir…can we talk to Kodi?” Kirby innocently asked. Balto smiled, “ Oh sure! Kodi’s on the kitchen table.” Dusty tilted her head. “You mean in the kitchen table?” She asked willingly. Balto laughed, “Ha…no.” Balto climbed up the stairs and left the two.

Dusty and Kirby entered the kitchen carefully. They both saw a husky lying down on the table. The husky looked quite plump and out of shape. Kirby approached the lifeless body. “Kodi, buddy…is that you?” The lifeless body suddenly moved. He raised his head and looked at Kirby. “What do you guys want now? Come to replace me as your friend.” Kodi bitterly said.

Dusty sighed and thought about what Kodi had said. “No, we came here to see if you’re okay. Kodi, what happened to you.” Kodi dropped his head. “ I guess I gained a few pounds.” Kodi blushed. “ Yeah, ‘a few’!” Kirby mockingly said. “ C’mon Kodi! Move, do something…why not get off the table!” Kodi grinned, “ Make me…” Dusty and Kirby pushed Kodi. Kodi fell to the floor. Kirby and Dusty rushed to the aid of their friend.

Ten seconds later Kodi opens his eyes. “Owww…” He groaned. Dusty laughed, “ That’s not what I meant by getting off the table.” Kirby laughed too, “ Yeah, you fell to the floor.” Kodi laughed with them, “Well, you know…gravity!” His friends helped him up and joined him outside. “Kodi, we have great news!” Dusty excitedly barked. Kirby smiled, “ Next month…. position for lead sled dog is open!”

Kodi’s eyes widened! “ Shut up, no way!” Dusty giggled,” Yes way! But you have a lot of competition...Don to be exact!” Kodi perked his ears up. “Well if I’m going to race against Don, I need to prepare! Can you guys maybe help me?” Kodi said shyly. Dust and Kirby smiled and both said at the same time, “We’re with you one hundred and ten percent!”
