This Is Home (Balto's Childhood)
This Is Home

“Get out, and stay out! What makes you think that anyone in the whole wide world would want you!” The butcher yelled as he kicked out a tiny little pup.
The tiny puppy had nothing else to do but whimper as the angry man yelled and screamed at him. Then the door slammed, and this poor pup was left all alone. The lonely pup looked at his master’s door and started scratching on it. The pup relentlessly kept scratching at the door until it finally opened. The pup looked up, and saw the butcher. The butcher let out a nasty growl and took his rather large knife and approached the scared dog. He began to slice through the air, just to scare the pup. Indeed the trick worked and the pup that was frightened ran away.
His heart beating, his speed gaining, his feelings hurt, the little pup was really running for his life. He ran into a dark alley, and hid under a small cardboard box. He realized this was the only shelter he had. So the poor pup cried himself to sleep, wishing tomorrow may hold him better luck.
Morning arose, and the town of Nome was up. Small rays of light peeked through holes in the tiny box the puppy was sleeping in. Sounds of people had awoken him. He yawned and went out of his temporary shelter. “What, why is their so much sound, today isn’t a holiday. Or is it?” Questioned the pup.
He emerged out of the alley to see tons of people crowded among the streets of Nome. All the other pups were playing on a corner of the street. The pup overfilled with joy ran to them. As soon as he got there, all the other pups just stared at him. A rather large black and white, blue-eyed dog approached him. “Well what do you know? A new kid!”
The husky gently grabbed the pup, “Welcome to the neighborhood, pal. The name’s Steele.”
“ You don’t look like a husky, actually you don’t look like a dog at all!” Laughed Steele as he threw the puppy back.
The whole group of puppies laughed. The puppy’s smile turned into a frown. “For your information I happen to be half wolf!” the pup responded.
The whole group including Steele became rather silent. Steele chuckled, “ Well wolf dog, do you know what we do to dogs LIKE YOU!”
Steele looked at his paw, and then looked back at him. Just as Steele said that, a voice yelled, “Steele, come here boy.”
Steele stopped and walked towards his master. He looked back and said, “It is not over yet wolf!”
The whole group of kids gave the pup a dirty look and went back to their game on another side of the street. For once in his whole life, the puppy never felt so hurt. He held back his tears and kept walking down the street. As he walked he bumped into a really small human. He remembered what these things were called, these babies.
The tiny child was in some sort of tiny shelter. The child kept saying, “Balto, Balto.”
The pup thought to himself, “ Balto…is that…a name. Is that my name!”
The pup smiled and wagged his tail. The human reached for him and Balto went closer. The baby reached closer, and was suddenly picked up in mid air. “Darling that wild dog almost bit our baby.” Gasped the mother of the child.
“What,” the man looked at the wild dog. “Sweetie, it’s that part wolf dog. I heard it attacked a human once.”
The pup tilted his head, not once did he ever attack a human. The human shooed the pup away. Suddenly, out of nowhere a gunshot blasted through the air. Then tons of adult dogs were barking. The pup was scared, but was very curious about the commotion. He investigated. He saw tons of humans cheering, and a little cute husky that stood out in the crowd. Instantly he fell in love with her, from her reddish-orange fur, to her cute long bandana. She was something that he had never seen before.
Just then he saw the pup Steele again. Steele approached him from behind, “Hey, I see you looking at that girl. Why not talk to her?”
Steele pushed the pup towards her that he accidentally bumped into her. The husky gave an awkward look at him. He looked into her beautiful brown eyes, and then remembered that she too, also had the same eyes as his mother. “So, I guess you probably new around here? For starters, you can call me Jenna.” Smiled the husky.
He reluctantly smiled,” Oh, yeah, I’m kind of new. My name is…” he had just remembered he technically didn’t have a name.
Jenna began to walk towards Balto, “Well then, do you have a nickname that other people call you by?”
It just so happened that he had remembered what that little girl called him, “Ummm…Balto. Yeah, you can call me Balto!”
Balto looked back at Jenna. Jenna was analyzing Balto from his big black ears to his large feet. “Is anything wrong with me?” Questioned Balto.
Jenna stuttered,” What no, what makes you think that!”
Out of nowhere Steele jumped out of the crowd. He went right in-between Balto and Jenna. “I’ll protect you from this monster, Jenna!” Steele heroically spoke.
“Steele!” stood Jenna. “He wasn’t doing anything bad to me.”
Balto sighed, “He’s right Jenna.” In surprise, Steele and Jenna both focused on him. “I’m a monster, and something as precious shouldn’t be around something like me.
Balto resisted the urge to cry, but it was of no use. Balto ran away from them, wishing he would never meet Steele, or Jenna again. Luckily Balto made it through the outskirts of Nome. There he noticed a small wooden boat. He went in. It looked pretty old, but good enough to live in. In the corner lay a small red blanket. “Wow, this place is nice.” Balto said.
Up in the sky he saw a whole flock of geese. Magnificently they were flying in perfect formation. Balto looked behind him and saw a goose walking. “AAHHCCKK, don’t those hooligans ever wait. Oh, I’m a failure as a bird, what would mother say.”
The goose looked up and saw a dog staring at him. “Hey, boy, are you going to eat me!” Yelled the goose.
“Oh, no, I just ate.” Lied Balto.
The goose made his way up the boat. “Well, hello there, my name is Boris. I come a long way from my country Russia.”
Balto lay down under the blanket, “ Hi, my name is Balto.”
“So what is this place?” Asked Boris.
Balto looked around, “Oh…this place is home.”
With that the tired pooch fell asleep. It sure has been a day for Balto.
