Jenna Can't Dance Forever
“Jenna you look awfully beautiful on this spectacular evening.” The masculine voice sent a shiver down the red husky’s spine, and a cocky smile spread across her face. The male crept forward, his tail wagging in pure pleasure, “Where’s Balto?” His lips pulled back revealing perfect white teeth.
“He’s um...out.” She said nervously, her heart was accelerating and the fear of her mate finding her and this other male only made her more excited.
“Out?”
“Yes he went with Boris. He is not allowed in the house,” She giggled,” and neither are you. You really need to leave.”
“Make me.” He smirked sitting on Jenna’s small yet soft bed in one of the corners of the living room. Jenna crouched low allowing her teeth to show slightly, “Is that all?” He asked.
“No,” she sprang from where she had been crouching and landed on top of the muscular male wolf and collapsed onto his body. “Satisfied?”
He chuckled, “Yes.”

“Balto slow down!” Boris squawked. Balto was now running as quickly as possible to the old forsaken brown boat where goose and wolf/dog slept.
“Boris that was amazing!” Balto smiled, even in his older age he showed signs of immaturity. “The northern lights aren’t usually that vivid in color.” He smiled so big; Boris thought Baltos’ face was going to fall off.
The goose shook his head, “We need to get some sleep now, it is almost morning.” He began making his way up the boardwalk.
“I wish Jenna could have come along, she loves the lights.” Balto sighed gazing at the beloved town of Nome, Alaska. Visions flooded his mind of his younger years when he had brought the diphtheria antitoxin to the sick patients of Nome. He shook his head of the distant memories and thought of his gorgeous mate, her sleek red coat and bushy red tail, a sly smile spread across his face, “I’ll surprise her.”
“Where are you going,” Boris said, “It’s nearly the time that everyone will be waking up? You’re an old dog now you need your sleep.”
“Nah, I’m just as old as you Boris, relax.” Balto laughed heartily and raced toward the small town. Boris sighed and grabbed a ratty old blanket resting on the side of the boat and curled up, waiting for Balto to return.
Balto merrily trotted through the town looking at all the houses, trying to remember which one belonged to Jenna’s owners. He paused in front of a large brown house; the windows were closed and locked up. He tried to see inside, to tell which room his Jenna was in.
He peered into the first window and saw a small bed and a girl in her teenage years sleeping soundly. “Rosie,” He muttered, she had been one of the sick patients that needed the medicine. The temperature had dropped and Balto shivered, he realized that he was getting tired and he collapsed underneath Rosie’s windowsill. His eyes fluttered shut and he allowed his breathing to slow so that he could sleep.
Chapter One
Jenna awoke with an unusual pain that was felt in all her muscles, as if she had ran three miles without stopping. Her heart raced, she knew what she had done the previous night and guilt washed over her. She looked down to see the male she had fallen in love with and her heart sank. Balto was going to be here any minute; Rosie always lets Balto inside when she wakes up. “Trek you need to leave!” She couldn’t cover up the urgency in her voice and his eyes flickered open the minute she finished speaking. He groggily lifted his head, and he smiled at Jenna.
“Well it would be bad if he found us like this.” He muttered, slowly rising out of the red husky’s bed. He licked her forehead and unhooked the lock in the nearest window with his nose and he crept outside. “See you later baby.” He replied and jumped off the ledge landing only a few feet onto the ground. Jenna smiled and blushed at her nickname, suddenly she heard Rosie coming down the stairs and she started barking.
“Whoa there girl,” Rosie said sleepily, “What are you so happy about?” She asked looking down at her husky. Rosie shrugged and walked to the door, noticing that Balto was waiting patiently for his mate to come outside. “He’s out there, girl.” Rosie said, she looked down at Jenna and then opened the door.
Balto smiled warmly and Jenna walked outside with him. Rosie instinctively shut the door behind the two dogs and went on with her morning. “How did you sleep?” Balto asked.
Jenna knew exactly how she slept, with a gorgeous wolf that I love with all my heart, “Fine.” She replied.
Balto sniffed the air and glanced at Jenna, “You smell strange.”
“Me?” She asked.
“Yea, it’s different.” She knew that he could smell Trek’s scent on her, and nervousness crept up on her.
“I’m sure it’s just nothing, you’re getting old Balto.” She flicked his snout with the end of her tail and she smirked.
“Yea I know.” He muttered, lost in his own thoughts.
“Hi mom and dad.” Kodi said, standing directly in front of Balto and Jenna.
“Aren’t you supposed to be on mail run?” Jenna asked her son.
“No, Kyle said we didn’t have work today so I guess this is my day off.” He smiled, and turned around to see Kirby, his best friend, walk up behind him.
“Hello Kirby.” Balto smiled at the bigger dog.
“Good morning sir, how have you been?” He asked politely, Kirby had always had a mutual respect for Balto, why shouldn’t he? Balto was after all Nome’s hero.
“I’ve been well, how is life for you Kirby?” Jenna was growing bored with small talk; she nuzzled Balto and left the three males to talk amongst themselves.
“Is Jenna ok?” Kirby asked watching the red female leave.
“Yea she’s just been acting different this morning.” Balto shook his head then turned his attention back to Kodi and Kirby, “You two up for a walk?” The young dogs nodded and they went in the opposite direction of where Jenna was headed.
Jenna noticed that there a few dogs in the boiler room, and she nosed open the old door. It made a loud creaking noise and she stepped inside, the room was quiet, as always, and she noticed Dusty, Ralph and Dixie sitting in a circle talking quietly. Jenna cocked her head to the side, wondering why their voices were so low; they hadn’t noticed her yet so Jenna didn’t make herself known. She sat a little closer, listening in to their conversation.
“Ralph you don’t get it, Balto is getting old and Jenna is getting tired of taking care of him.” Dixie said, Jenna was taken aback; one of her best friends was talking bad about her and her mate. Dixie was the one that spoke the most about gossip, so no one could trust her.
“Dixie don’t be so harsh,” Dusty said, “Balto isn’t that old, and he can take care of himself.” Jenna smiled.
“Well if I was Jenna I would be fed up with his age.” Dixie stuck her nose in the air and walked out of the boiler room. That’s when Jenna stood up, the door creaked shut after Dixie left and Dusty and Ralph looked at Jenna in shock.
“Did you…” Dusty began.
“Yup, the whole thing.” Jenna said without a hint of disappointment in her voice.
“Well don’t listen to her, she knows nothing about true love.” Dusty sighed looking longingly at Ralph, who was focused on a rat scampering across a shelf.
“Dusty could I…um talk to you alone?” Jenna looked down at her paws then back at Ralph who still wasn’t paying attention.
“Ralph do you mind?” Dusty asked, and pawed his ear.
“Huh?” He asked shaking his head, “Oh right, I’m going to go find Kodi and Kirby.”
“They went with Balto.” Jenna said, “But I’m sure they’re around town somewhere.”
“Thanks Jen.” Ralph said and smiled at the two females before he exited.
“So Jenna what is it?” Dusty said sitting up, she was a beautiful gray husky, with a kind and forgiving personality.
“Well that whole conversation that Dixie stirred up is partly true.” Jenna said, embarrassment flooding her senses.
“What do you mean?” Dusty asked with an alert tone in her voice.
“I met this wolf a few months ago when I went for a walk with Balto one evening, Balto and the Wolf knew each other but as enemies. Balto hates Luke, the wolf’s, guts and I somewhat have the opposite feeling. I cheated on Balto and I know it’s wrong but Balto is getting old and he’s a year older than I am so it’s kind of difficult.” Jenna finished and breathed in deeply.
“Are you planning on having pups with Luke?”
“No, I don’t think I’m going to get pregnant.” Jenna shook her head, “I can’t.”
“You have to do this.” Dusty said, she had backed Jenna into a corner and her fur was ruffled with aggravation. It had been one month since the incident between Jenna and Luke.
“I can’t just up and leave, it will look suspicious.” Jenna whined.
Dusty sighed, “If you want to hurt Balto then stay here and let him watch you grow bigger each day.” She snarled.
Jenna wasn’t used to Dusty’s snappy tone, “Where am I supposed to go for the next month?” She asked.
“I will take you to a place tonight, we can’t wait any longer. You already starting to show.” Dusty said she glanced at Jenna’s stomach, which had been stretching for more and more each day.
“I-I,” Jenna hung her head, “I had everything I ever wanted, and now it’s gone.”
“That’s not true,” Dusty said nuzzling Jenna’s chin, “This is all a secret, no one will ever know.” The two females looked at each other and agreed to meet when the moon was the highest in the night sky.
Jenna had her head down as she made her way from Dusty’s porch to her own home. The wind carried an eerie scent that tickled the female’s snout and she sneezed. The fur on her back stood on end as she heard a growl from behind her. “So it’s true?” The voice cracked, it was a young male who had spoke and fear choked Jenna.
“Kodi?” She turned facing her youngest son his furry cheeks were tear-stained.
“How could you?” He asked, shaking his head.
“What?” She asked, knowing that her son knew her secret.
“Dad…he loves you.” He moaned.
“Shhh, Kodi, honey please keep your voice down.”
“Why should I? Why shouldn’t the whole town know that you’re pregnant with wolf pups?” He growled his tail bristled in anger.
“Please let me explain.” She pleaded.
“You’re supposed to be my mentor. You’re my mom…” His voice trailed off and stared into her emerald eyes. “Traitor.” He murmured and lunged at her. She was stunned and fell on her back, whining in pain. He stood over her, snarling, “I should kill you…I should…” His eyes were glazed with fury.
“Kodi please don’t. You wouldn’t kill your own mother.” She said.
“No, but I don’t consider you my mother any longer.” He held her gaze and bared his teeth.
“Then the only way I’m going to survive is through self-defense.” She grunted and kicked him off of her using her back legs. He went flying into the air and landed in a snow bank, dazed and confused. Jenna ran as fast as she could, “Where am I going to go?” She told herself, looking for any sort of hiding spot.
Kodi lifted his head and shook the fur off his snout, “AND DON’T COME BACK!” He howled.
Jenna slowed her pace to catch her breath; she tilted her head up and realized she was back at Dusty’s house. She saw the gray husky sleeping on the porch, “Dusty.” Jenna breathed.
“Jenna?” Dusty’s eyes flickered open, “What?”
“Kodi is trying to kill me, he knows.” Jenna said, laying next to the husky…her only companion.
“This is bad. You need to leave now,” Dusty nudged Jenna in the side to help her stand up. Darkness had invaded the small town, so going anywhere was out of the question, “We leave at dawn.”
“But where am I going to live?” Dusty swung her head around at Jenna she looked so pitiful. She was shaking and shivering, partly because she was petrified of what had happened with her son.
“With Luke.” Dusty said, facing the other way, she did not want to see Jenna’s expression.
“I can’t do that to Balto.” Jenna shook her head fiercely.
“If you want to get killed by Kodi or any other dog that finds out about your secret then stay here, but if you want to live a happy life with Luke than you will come with me tomorrow morning.” Dusty glared, “Common sense…I will see you in the morning.” She spoke through clenched teeth and passed through the doggy-door leading into her own home.
Jenna sighed, watching her breath curl around her face. The temperature had dropped and the wind had picked up. She decided that she was going to spend the rest of the night in the boiler room; she could not face Rosy or anyone else on her way back home.
She stepped lightly off Dusty’s front porch and walked a few feet before turning left and entering the small yet cozy room. She hid behind a wall that jutted out, so that no one could see her when they came inside and she circled an area a few times before plopping down. She sighed heavily and allowed her droopy eyelids to finally close and she drifted off to sleep…her last night in Nome.
